The myth tells about how Persephone is taken to the underworld by Hades, and while there she eats three pomegranate seeds. This ties her to the underworld forever, but she negotiates being allowed to return to the world every spring to spend the summer with her mother. When she does, the Earth begins to bloom, and she brings springtime with her.
